Many people start the consulting recruiting process with just 4-5 consulting firms on their list–the MBB firms (McKinsey, BCG, and Bain) and a couple other top consulting firms. But because consulting is such a competitive field to break into, My Consulting Offer recommends casting a wide net. It’s good to have 10-20 firms on your list to apply to.
To help, we’ve pulled together this list of tier 2 consulting application deadlines. This list includes firms like Accenture, Kearney, Oliver Wyman, LEK, and more. These are great firms where you’ll get training and experience to launch your consulting career.

How To Get Your Consulting Application Ready
1. Develop Your Materials
For most consulting firms, you’ll need to prepare a resume and cover letter tailored to the skills and values those firms seek in candidates. Generally, you’ll want to highlight leadership, problem-solving, analytical abilities, teamwork, and a result-oriented mindset. It’s okay if you haven’t worked in consulting before. You can use your academic, extracurricular, and business experience to show how you’ve demonstrated these skills.
Quantify your bullet points, using numbers to demonstrate the value you delivered in professional or academic experiences. Proofread your documents multiple times, then have a peer or mentor review them.

2. Get Acquainted with the Firm
Thoroughly research the firms you are interested in joining. Take the time to understand their culture and the types of projects they work on. Network with consultants currently working at those firms to learn more about their experience and hopefully land a referral.
Remember that networking is about building relationships, and it will likely take more than one conversation to get that referral. While a referral doesn’t guarantee an interview, it can take your resume to the top of the pile.

3. Begin Your Case Prep
While many applicants wait until they land an interview to start practicing case interviews, you should start as early as you can. The interview may come sooner than you’d think!
There are lots of options for online resources for case prep, including working with one of our case coaches at MCO, who are all former BCG, Bain & McKinsey interviewers. You can also find a casing buddy who is as eager to nail the interview as you are and practice a variety of cases.

What Comes Next in the Consulting Recruiting Process?
After submitting your consulting application, you can expect the following steps:
1. Application Screening: Recruiters and consultants will review your resume, cover letter, and other materials, such as transcripts and test scores, to assess your academic background, professional experience, leadership roles, and other consulting-related skills.
Some firms use automated tools to review applications for keywords related to the role, and many applications are rejected at this stage. A strong, tailored application is necessary to move to the next round.
2. Online Assessments: After passing the initial screening, most consulting firms now have online assessments to help them identify top candidates from the thousands of applications they receive. Firms use these tests as a standardized way to measure your cognitive abilities, analytical skills, and decision-making. They can also test you using brain teasers or parts of a consulting case interview.

3. One-Way Video Interviews: If you pass the online assessment, many firms will ask you to complete a one-way video interview. In this interview, you will be given a set of questions to respond to by recording your answers within a certain timeframe.
The questions are often behavioral-based, such as describing experiences that demonstrate leadership or problem-solving. Don’t worry! When you get to these steps in the consulting recruiting process, we have further resources to help you, such as BCG One Way Video Interviews.
If you successfully pass these steps, you will be invited to the formal interview process, which starts with the first round and is typically a live, in-person interview.
4. First Round Live Interviews: The first-round interviews are usually divided into 2 parts: a personal fit interview and a case interview.
The fit interview focuses on your background, interest in consulting, and cultural fit with the firm. You may be asked questions about your academic or professional experiences and the challenges you’ve overcome.
The case interview is a critical component of the interview process and will ultimately determine if you move to the final round. In this portion, you will be asked to solve a business problem in real time to assess your problem-solving skills, logical thinking, quantitative abilities, and communication skills.
5. Final Round Interviews: Upon successfully passing the first round interview, candidates will be invited to the final round. This round typically consists of more in-depth case interviews conducted by more senior consultants or partners. These interviews are designed to test your analytical skills at a higher level and assess your ability to handle complex business scenarios under pressure.
Final-round interviews also allow partners to assess whether they would feel comfortable putting you in front of clients. They are evaluating not just your technical skills but also your executive presence, communication style, and overall fit with the firm’s values and team dynamics.
6. Potential Offer: After the final round of interviews, the hiring committee will review your performance and make a final decision. Feedback is typically provided to the candidate within a few days to a few weeks following the final interview.
If an offer is extended, you’ll likely be given some time to decide and may be invited to events or conversations with current consultants to help you make your decision.
